Renee Baker Artist Statement:

My works are dark recitatives that speak directly to the frazzled sort of lives we lead today. Always looking for meaning, but also searching for ways to peek, to be different , to be noticed. As a disruptive recontextualist, I present work that I hope will challenge the way you think about the way you see the world, how you process information and to ponder what your statement to the world is to be. To challenge the viewer beyond existing but hopefully to actively engage in that dark, futuristic voyage of your own. As an artist, I work in experimental film, improvised music, dance, jazz theatre, butoh, visual art (canvas, paper), book arts, sculptural reconfigure of scores, and sound art installations.

Whether creating traditional imagery or abstract, they are typically a distillation of emotions and psychological states, the influence of intuitive reasoning, extreme analysis of inner states. Certainly in visual scores I am providing for the performer a panorama of scripts, sometimes mysterious, sometimes obvious, eerily abstract but suggestive of my love of life. Nomadic symbology depicting the feelings of closeness, oneness and individuality at the same time. I believe in longing, passion, drama represented by intent without my needing the listener/viewer to agree with my representation. I take the risk of being misunderstood, even misrepresented, but ultimately I hope to provide a thought provoking piece and a comfort that there is still the possibility of beauty in experiences. Whether film, writings, sculpture, paperworks, canvasses, graphic scores, traditional notative devices, gestural conducting languages, they are designed to make personal statements that share everything and nothing, depending on the mind and intent of personal access.
