Alternating Currents Live presents: Tom Hamilton & City of Vorticity

with guest soloists

Rick Aaron - flute
Marielle Allschwang - violin
Jon Mueller - percussion
Steve Nelson-Raney - saxophone

“City of Vorticity” is a constantly changing electronic sound environment composed by Tom Hamilton with a constantly changing sequence of improvising soloists who interact with the electronic sound. “City of Vorticity” was first presented at Roulette in Brooklyn, NY, as part of their Interpretations series and subsequently presented at the 2016 Sound Symposium festival in St. John’s Newfoundland. A CD recording was released by Pogus Productions in Fall 2015.

Tom Hamilton has composed and performed electronic music for over 25 years. He most often features older analog synthesizers in performance and recording. Since 1979, he has been exploring the relationships between 'Formal and Informal Music' in an ongoing series of concerts and recordings that contrast structure with improvisation and textural electronics with acoustic instruments.  Since 1990, Hamilton has been a member of composer Robert Ashley's touring opera ensemble, performing sound processing and mixing in both recordings and concerts. An installation version of Tom Hamilton’s “Off-Hour Wait State” was presented at Woodland Pattern in 1997 with a performance that included guest soloists Rick Aaron and Steve Nelson-Raney. In 2002, the Tom Hamilton - Peter Zummo Duo performed the collaborative composition “Slybersonic Tromosone” in the Alternating Currents Live series.
