Alternating Currents Live presents: The Josh Abrams Quartet
Josh Abrams - bass
Axel Dorner - trumpet
Guillermo Gregorio - reeds
Jeff Parker - guitar
Bassist Josh Abrams' quartet embodies a remarkable geographic cross section
of today's free
music. Josh Abrams studied at the Settlement School of Music in
Philadelphia and played in the band The Roots. Upon moving to Chicago,
Abrams helped form the quartet Town And Country and currently also plays
in the Nicole Mitchell Trio and the David Boykin Expanse.
Guitarist Jeff Parker is well known for his work with Tortoise, Isotope 217, the
Chicago Underground Orchestra and, most recently, his first album as
leader, Like-Coping on Delmark.
Guillermo Gregorio's work spans a
lifetime of playing improvised music with Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jim
O'Rourke and Anthony Braxton to name just a few, as well as a long
career as a composer exploring new ideas utilizing graphic scores.
Berlin-based trumpeter Axel Dorner's output as both free improvisor and
composer covers multiple continents with John Butcher, Alexander von
Schlippenbach and Mats Gustafsson. He can often be heard in the
ensemble Die Enttauschung which devotes its performances to the music of
Thelonius Monk.
The music of the Josh Abrams Quartet is vividly
captured on a new Delmark CD released late last year titled Cipher.
This concert is brought to you by the Alternating Currents Live series,
broadcast on WMSE (91.7) FM, Milwaukee.
