Alternating Currents Live presents: Hardcore Chambermusic

Hans Koch, Martin Schütz, & Fredy Studer Trio
Hans Koch - reeds, electronics, sampling, and composition
Martin Schütz - electric and acoustic cellos, electronics, sampling, and composition
Fredy Studer - drums, percussion, and composition

The Swiss trio "KOCH-SCHÜTZ-STUDER" is well known on the international scene for its radical and uncompromising hardcore chamber music. These three musicians have worked together since 1990 to create a trio music characterized by hard contrasts and contradictions. Sequenced sounds from various unrecognizable sources and their very original approach to live-electronics creates a dense wall of sound in stark contrast to completely acoustic, minimalistic-ambient improvisations. Analog ("played") and digital ("programmed") beats are juxtaposed against free "outer-limits" improvisations. It is a music free of stylistic restrictions. In addition to recording as a trio, they have collaborated with musicians from Cuba (the CD "Fidel"), Cairo ("Heavy Cairo Traffic"), as well as New York DJs I-Sound and M.Singe ("Roots & Wires.")

Biographies:

Self taught drummer and percussionist Fredy Studer was born 1948 in Lucerne, where he still resides. He was one of the first drummers to incorporate open improvisation as well as straight beats into his style, and, since the early seventies, has worked with many different bands on a wide variety of projects, including concerts and workshops, radio and television performances, and compositions for dance, theater and film throughout the world. Current groups and projects include his duo with percussionist Pierre Favre and the all-percussion-trio "Schulkowsky- Studer-Baron" (with Robyn Schulkowsky and Joey Baron). He was named "... one of the most innovative drummers in Europe..." by "Drums & Percussion" magazine and his work has been recorded on more than fifty CDs and LPs.

Hans Koch quit his career as a recognized classical clarinetist to become one of the most innovative improvising reed-players in Europe. Since the 1980s he has worked with everyone from Cecil Taylor to Fred Frith. He has helped shape the sound of Koch-Schütz-Studer Trio with his very original treatment of live electronics, both as an extension of his saxophones and clarinets as well as with sampling/sequencing.

Martin Schütz is a cellist and electronic musician, improvisor and composer. He has been a figure on the European scene of improvised music since the 1980s and has played with innumerable musicians from Europe, USA and elsewhere. His approach to the electric and acoustic cello as a rhythm-& sound-machine is very unique and he is an acknowledged composer / performer for theater, dance and film.
