Alternating Currents Live presents:
Jon Mueller/Bhob Rainey/Jim Schoenecker

Jon Mueller: percussion
Bhob Rainey: saxophone/computer
Jim Schoenecker: synthesizer

The sound of this trio presents itself as something of a mystery; Mueller plays a variety of snare drums via a home stereo, Rainey turns the saxophone into a series of electronic sounding hums and animal-like communication, and Schoenecker derives subtle tones and sounds from his synthesizer. Together, it is often hard to discern who is responsible for what sound, but this very puzzlement belies the reward of simple listening.

Jon Mueller has been an active percussionist since studying jazz with the late Hal Russell in the early 90s. Since then, he has performed with the groups Telecognac, Pele, Collections of Colonies of Bees, and Raccoons. He has also collaborated with a variety of American and European artists including Aranos, Boris Hauf, Jarboe, Byard Lancaster, Asmus Tietchens, Matt Turner, Achim Wollscheid, and has also performed as part of Fred Lonberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra. He has written music for dance and film, performed on numerous CDs and LPs, and has toured throughout the U.S. and Japan.

Bhob Rainey's saxophone playing eschews standard techniques; in fact, it rarely involves what have become common extended techniques. Yet, his sounds have a peculiar directness, integrated into a music that is at once meditative and disquieting. The saxophone is forgotten as one becomes immersed in pure tones, metallic chords, palpable breath, and always that primal silence, both mesmerizing and volatile. Rainey's music, although entirely acoustic, is in close kinship with electronic music, as evidenced in his collaborations with Gunter Mueller, Lionel Marchetti, Kevin Drumm, Ralf Wehowsky, Jerome Noetinger, and Jason Lescalleet, to name a few. With trumpeter Greg Kelley, he is the cofounder of the unlikely improv supergroup, nmperign, and is also the founder and director of the premier electroacoustic ensemble, the BSC.

Jim Schoenecker has released electronic music under the name pressboard for a variety of labels including Zod, Antiopic, and Stassisfield. He has performed in the U.S. and Japan, and is 1/2 of the Topscore label which releases electronic and experimental music and video.

"Rainey (has an) utterly distinct approach to playing the soprano saxophone, an intensely physical determination to take the instrument beyond all obvious limits. He works outside of idiom, pummeling a column of breath, eliciting refracted tones, overblowing ferociously. Closer to Antonin Artaud than Sidney Bechet." - Julian Cowley, The Wire

"Mueller certainly knows how to keep his listeners guessing and listening closely to his strange and interesting arrangements."- Richard Di Santo, Incursion.org

"Mueller has found a way to go beyond his free jazz past and take the world of instrumental virtuosity into the 21st century."- Dan Warburton, Paristransatlantic.com
