Jason Kahn and Jon Mueller work with an unusual variety of acoustic percussion and electronics instruments to create a range of sound and frequencies that fill the performances space offering a different musical experience unique to that environment. A lot of Jon Mueller's range comes from gongs and gong recordings, which provide a broad frequency spectrum. For Jason Kahn, an analog synthesizer interjects a whole other range of sounds outside of the gong frequencies. Together, particularly at higher volumes, it becomes difficult from a listening standpoint to determine "what is what" and "what is where."
Their duo recordings include the CDs Topography (Table of the Elements / Xeric), Supershells (Formed Records), and Papercuts (Crouton).
Born New York, but presently based in Zürich, Switzerland, Jason Kahn's vast output includes composition, site-specific installation, percussion, and live electronics, along with a large body of sound work for film, dance and radio. He has exhibited and performed in museums, galleries, art spaces, festivals and clubs throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Turkey and South Africa.
Jon Mueller has been an active drummer and percussionist over the past 25 years. Increasingly focused on a physical dialog between situation and material, he often bypasses standard approaches to percussion, considering the space in which that sound is presented in order to create a larger experience for those listening. He has performed throughout the United States, Japan, and Europe, and has released recordings on labels such as Table of the Elements, Type Recordings, Jagjaguwar, and others.
'By subjecting audiences to the inhalation of desensitizing fumes derived from the quintessence of drumming, Jason Kahn and Jon Mueller have amassed a number of stunning releases over the years, many of them worthy of inclusion in the pantheon of Static Music with a Brain."
- Paris Transatlantic, May 2010
"Deeply intelligent, nuanced and free-thinking individuals, their collaborations are well worth seeking out. It is always necessary for me to retune my ears listening to their work; they place, whether always by intention or happy accident, much of the beauty of their sound work deep within the white and pink squalls they kick up. Two percussionists restlessly engaged in the possibilities of noise."
- Crow With No Mouth, December 2010
