Loose Assembly features a quintet of Chicago improvisers developing a unique framework of composed and improvised musical elements within the sonically rich possibilities of its unique instrumentation.

Loose Assembly is led by musician/composer Mike Reed. As a drummer, Reed has been part of the vibrant Chicago jazz and improvised music community since 1997. He has performed regularly with David Boykin, Nicole Mitchell, Jeff Parker, Axel Doerner, Josh Abrams, Jim Baker, Rob Mazurek and others. As a leader Reed has released two critically acclaimed albums by his cross-genre group The Treehouse Project, as well as the debut recording of his quintet Loose Assembly. He currently is a member of The David Boykin Expanse , Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra and Josh Berman Quartet.

QUOTES

"Loose Assembly, Reed's three-year-old quintet, incorporates freewheeling sonic explorations with nuanced harmonic structures. By reconfiguring group improvisations developed during practice sessions into traditional frameworks, Reed arrives at a perfect balance between unfettered creativity and formal aesthetics.... Loose Assembly's CD debut, Last Year's Ghost (482 Music, 2006) merges the austere reverence of chamber music with the scalding intensity of Chicago's historically ebullient free jazz."
-Troy Collins, All About Jazz

"Alto, vibes, cello and bass makes up the contingent, but there's nothing loose about these assemblages. It's tight as a wheelnut."
- Brian Morton, The Wire
