| Sunday, October 19, at 7 p.m. Woodland Pattern Book Center 720 East Locust Street, Milwaukee $6.00 General/$5.00 Advance tickets and Members Alternating Currents Live presents: Labyrinth and other Journeys... a concert of solo percussion composed and performed by Milwaukee-based percussionist Michael Bettine. Labyrinth is a new work by Michael Bettine  performed
on over 30 different gongs from around the world. It
is a journey into both sound and silence, exploring
the energy of percussion. Michael works with both
composed and improvised music, striking a balance
between the melodic aspects of such European
percussionists as Pierre Favre and Andrea Centazzo,
and the anarchy of La Quan Ninh and Paul Lytton.
Michael specializes in metal percussion, utilizing a
set up of over 80 cymbals, gongs, singing bowls, bell
plates, bells, etc., as well as drum kit and hand
drums. Starting his career as a jazz drummer, his music has steadily evolved into a more orchestrated form of percussion chamber music. He has created a body of work that moves beyond labels and boundaries, developing a passionate new musical language based on Sacred Geometry, Chaos Theory, spirituality, sound healing, and the effects of vibrations on the human body and energy fields, boldly combining the wealth of the past with the present and future. In addition to his work as a composer and improviser, Michael is an accomplished journalist. He has been a contributing writer to Modern Drummer for the past 20 years and has written for magazines including DownBeat, Avant, and Drums and Rhythm. His collection of interviews and essays Percussion Profiles (with Trevor Taylor) is published by Soundworld in England.
