Alternating Currents Live presents: TRIAGE
Triage is one of the most active young bands on the
improvised music scene in Chicago today. Initially
conceived by Dave Rempis on saxophones, with Jason
Ajemian on bass and Tim Daisy on drums, the group has
been key to defining the sound of a new generation of
Chicago improvisers. As a trio, these three combine
to create wide-ranging forms of musical expression.
Performing original compositions almost exclusively,
the band moves through quiet textural pieces, grooving
jazz-oriented tunes, and wailing, expressionistic
romps with equal ability. Using these compositions as
a springboard for their improvisations, they manage to
combine the rhythmic sensibilities of the American
jazz and free jazz tradition with the more abstract
spaces frequently associated with European
improvisers.
"These guys take their work seriously and engage the
compositions with total commitment, taking the
necessary time to develop ideas to the full, producing
as a result one of the most solid and satisfying
outings from Chicago I’ve heard this year."
Dan Warburton, Signal to Noise
"Rempis’ saxophone playing is nothing short of
fantastic, at times reminiscent of Coltrane’s later
work. Ajemian and Daisy both exhibit a subtle mastery
of their instruments...this show should be great!"
Joe Tarr, Knoxville Metro Pulse
Bios:
Dave Rempis has emerged as one of the most active
young players in the Chicago improvised music scene.
His work with the Vandermark Five has been noted many
times, including by The Boston Globe’s noted jazz
critic Bob Blumenthal who referred to him as the
band’s "primary firebreather." It has also provided
him the opportunity to perform extensively in clubs,
concert halls, and festivals throughout the U.S.,
Canada, and Europe. His own work at home, most
regularly with Triage and The Dave Rempis Quartet
(w/Jim Baker, Jason Roebke, Tim Daisy) has been called
"ever more impressive" by Lloyd Sachs of the
Sun-Times. Rempis has also worked with such musicians
as Paul Lytton, Axel Doerner, Hamid Drake, Fred
Lonberg-Holm, Michael Zerang, Jim Baker, Kevin Drumm,
Paul Nilsson-Love, Chris Jonas, and Joe Morris. He
also curates a weekly improvised music concert series
at 3030, a performance space situated in a former
church in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago.
Jason Ajemian is a Virginia native who has studied and
played with Rufus Ried, Kevin Norton, Tony Malaby and
Michael Formanek. In Chicago for three years now,
Ajemian has become a staple of the burgeoning
improvised music scene, especially among the emerging
generation of enthusiastic and energetic improvisers.
He has performed with countless Chicago stalwarts,
including Jeff Parker, Ken Vandermark, David Boykin,
Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jeb Bishop, and Matt Bauder. His
bass playing graces many bands, including Dragons
1976, White Blue Yellow and Clouds, The Crisis
Ensemble, Lake Effect, and Keefe Jackson’s Project
Project.
Tim Daisy is a Chicago native who began performing
around town at the age of fourteen. His playing
experiences are too extensive to recount, including
membership in rock, latin, jazz, and improvised music
ensembles throughout the area. His ability to move
effortlessly and creatively through all these
different mediums has made him the first call drummer
of his generation, and keeps him busier performing
than anyone in his age group. In the winter of 2002,
Daisy was added to the lineup of the Vandermark Five,
replacing veteran drummer Tim Mulvenna. Daisy has also
performed with Joe McPhee, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jim
Baker, Daniel D'Agaro, and Chris Jonas.
This concert is brought to you by the Alternating Currents Live series,
broadcast on WMSE (91.7) FM, Milwaukee.
