The Alash Ensemble of Tuva will bring a unique Central Asian musical form to Woodland Pattern Book Center on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 7pm.
Alash has won numerous international awards in Tuvan throat singing, a technique which allows vocalists to sing multiple pitches at one time. Ensemble members also play a variety of Tuvan traditional instruments, contributing to an overall musical experience that a recent Washington Post review described as "absolutely stunning."
Alash is based in the remote Central Asian Republic of Tuva, the world center of throat singing. Even though the Alash musicians are from halfway around the world, they have a tie to Wisconsintheir manager/translator Sean Quirk, who now lives in Tuva, grew up in Whitefish Bay. The Ensemble is in Milwaukee the week of March 15-18 for Arts in Classroom Education (ACE) workshops through the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to performances, Alash shares traditional Tuvan music and culture through school and college workshops, and also performs and records with Western musicians. Collaborative performances have ranged from the avant-garde jazz of Sun Ra Arkestra to the classical Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Alash members were featured guest performers on a 2009 Grammy-winning CD with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and toured with the Flecktones in December, 2008 and 2009.
