Joel Lipman: Origins of Poetry Stamp Art, PoeMvelopes, & Visual Poems Exhibition Opening Reception—April 1, 1-4pm Reading & Gallery Talk with Joel Lipman: 2pm FREE from the Origins of Poetry series
Joel Lipman is a native of Kenosha and graduate of UW-Madison. He is professor of Art and English at the University of Toledo. Among his beautifully obscure books of poetry are Provocateur [Bloody Twin Press, 1988], Machete Chemistry/Panades Physics, with Yasser Musa [Cubola New Art Foundation, 1994], The Real Ideal [Luna Bisante Prods, 1996], and Subversao Deliberada [International Writers & Artists Association, 2000]. Represented in the anthology Writing To Be Seen [Core, Light & Dust, 2001], his visual poems were exhibited in 2002 and 2003 at the New York Center for the Book and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Long active as a mail artist and a five-time recipient of Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships in Poetry, an on-line portfolio of his work can be found at Light and Dust Poets. Workshop: Origins of Poetry: Exploring the Materials & Practice of Mail Art & Visual Poetry with Joel Lipman Saturday, May 12th, 1-4pm $60 / $55 members, materials included Letters, signs, marks, glyphs & words are the practical, physical materials of visual poems. Visual poetry's technologies range across methods & strategies from today's digital applications to those reaching back for their origins to Paleolithic gouging, scratching & pre-alphabetic gestures. The workshop will explore found & obsolete materials, palimpsests, non-lexical arrangements, rubberstamps & other adaptive print devices & technologies. The page, envelope and postcard will be our specific, objective & functional "canvases." Participants should bring art & writing tools, marking devices & usable personal materials & examples. Additional print supplies and rubberstamps will be available. The focus will be on crafting the visual poem, exploring the page & conceptualizing mail art objects & correspondence projects.
