Exhibition September 21-October 30 Reception & Artist's Talk Thursday, September 30, 5-7 pm Workshop Saturday & Sunday, September 25 & 26 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (short break for lunch) $65 Developing Ideas for Artist's Books This workshop focuses on generating form and content for books. Participants will use writing exercises, brainstorming techniques, and will work with the creative process to spark ideas. Although no previous experience is necessary, this workshop is particularly useful for designers, artists and writers who want to approach creative work from the inside out. Book structures and technical issues will be discussed as they relate to specific projects developed in the workshop. Participants can expect to have one or two mock-ups by the end of the two-day workshop. Limited to 12 people. Preregistration required. Bio Susan E. King is an artist and writer who started making books after she moved to Southern California in the 1970's to be part of the experimental Feminist Studio Workshop. She eventually was the studio director of the Women's Graphic Center at the Woman's Building in San Francisco. She grew up in the South, in a family of storytellers. Southern oral tradition and history, and writing about place often appear in her work. Trained as a sculptor, she brings sculptural aspects to making printed and one of a kind artist's books. Her work is in major collections including The Getty Center, Bel Air; the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art Library, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum Library, London. She divides her time between Los Angeles and rural Kentucky. Chronicle Books in San Francisco recently published a trade edition of her artist's book, Treading the Maze: an artist's journey through breast cancer. |
