Stacy Szymaszek

Stacy Szymaszek was born in Milwaukee, WI in 1969. After living in Philadelphia and Chicago she found what she was looking for back in

Milwaukee in the form of Woodland Pattern Book Center, where she worked from 1999-2005. Huzzah! Some of her chapbooks are: Some Mariners (Etherdome, 2004), Mutual Aid (gong, 2004), Pasolini Poems (Cy Press, 2005) and There Were Hostilities (release, 2005). While in Milwaukee some of her cultural works included: curating readings at the Jody Monroe Gallery, co-editing the journal traverse, keeping life-sustaining poetry on the shelves of WP, and editing the acclaimed Gam: A Survey of Great Lakes Writing. In 2005 she moved to New York to work for the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church, where she has recently been named its new Artistic Director. Some of her cultural works in addition to Project work include: contributing editor for fascicle, coeditor of Instance Press, and she continues on with the Gam (is a gift) project. Szymaszek is the author of Emptied of All Ships and the forthcoming Hyper-glossia, both with Litmus Press. She is happy to be reading at one of her favorite places.

observant of landscape and entitled

to alter it

educated guess what’s buried in the trenches

I’ll mandate its rise

natural as everything I

associate myself with

slow momentum

desert weather deck

and bulk merchandise

adapt my speech to the ration of words

per daywardrobe of

allocated head covering

age-old loose cloak

swirl of flax petals

circulatory strategy

raptorial

banks

designate

safe conduct

an hour

embellishes

the future

where residence

might favor me

though my face cannot

be rendered in this

inaugural hood

without bedizened pectorals
I could have held you

explain
my name

the same as

a saint

roasted inside a bronze ox

this time I pray

to stay

where I land

you —

when in bloused form , flee!

further from

my annular instinct

what of my persuasion now

as twiner of soft speech more often met

with curves of dispassion

does dream home take a hyphen? unsure in shorthand

pardon my eye larger than my brain

I am not required to captain this brackish lake

feeding with a range of flamingos

something in the water turns us

pink again
