Cultural Society publisher Zach Barocas will lead a discussion on the role of the small press, the pleasures and necessity of creating community, and the hows and whys of starting a press.
The Cultural Society website was started by Zach Barocas in Woodside, NY, in September, 2001 in hopes of creating a community whose energies could be networked through the site. Cultural Society would be both a place to see work & a place to become familiar with other artists and a hub for contributors. Jon Curley (a poet & critic in NYC) joined Barocas as co-editor. When the editors decided to move into publishing broadsides, letterpress designer Kimberley Yurkiewicz joined up to help coordinate production. Peter O'Leary is the sole credited advisory editor. Cultural Society publications include Pam Rehm's Saving Bonds, Joel Bettridge's That Abrupt Here, and Zach Barocas' Among Other Things in addition to lovingly produced broadsides by Michael Heller, Philip Jenks, Devin Johnston, Paul Muldoon, Les Murray, Peter O'Leary, and John Tipton.
